Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (1991)

A blast to the past on HBOGo today. I haven’t seen this film in so long it was like watching for the first time.

In the prime of the television show, “Married With Children”, Christina Applegate was the IT girl. It was an obvious choice for the lead role of the film about a group of siblings being left alone for two months as their mother runs off to Australia for some “time off”. Geez, she’d be in jail if this took place today.
Applegate is the oldest of the five kids who are left with an elderly babysitter that passes away in her sleep. Without any money, Applegate must go get a job in order to have the cash to feed the ungrateful family.

The movie wasn’t a big hit when it came out in the ’90s but after release on home video, the film took on a life of its own with a cult following. It’s a fun movie though at times it ran a little stale. That may have been the reason it didn’t have huge success. I think the combination of story line based on adults then a second one with the kids made the ratio of fun to serious a little too serious. Overall, its a decent film that is worth a watch.
