Ok, so first of all the minute I started the book I did not like the writing style of the author. To me the book felt like she was trying to make it a poem, but it came off more as pretentious instead of poetic.
The characters all unlikeable, especially the main character, Cady. I don’t know if the author intentionally made both the main and sub-characters because she was trying to portray “socialite” status or not. It just seemed forced and fake.
Now, on to what I liked about the book. I originally thought this was going to be a Romeo Juliet for the modern day, but was very VERY surprised by the twist at the end. I mean, this major twist didn’t come until the last 20% of the book… but you felt it at various times throughout.
Thank god I finished the last 20% at home at 1am versus at work during my lunch break because I bald like a baby.
Ultimately, I gave the book 3 stars because I forced myself to continue on. This book was third on our Library’s best rated Young Adult books, so I wanted to see what the hype was all about. I don’t think the author needed that poetic flair to it, it could have been a lot more straight forward for me. While the ending pulled up my 2-stars to a 3, I don’t know if I would recommend or continue on with the author’s bibliography since I was not a fan of her writing style.
