La Ley – “Adaptacion” (2016)

La Ley returns after 13 years with an album that is more pop than rock

Over the years, I have never been a real big fan of the Chilean rock band, La Ley. The new album, Adaptacion has now changed that for me. Their move to a universal genre has impressed me, and I am ready to listen, and so should you.

Early works by La Ley were once considered new wave, but they became one of the leaders in Latin rock winning Grammy awards for their work. The change from a dark experimental side to a mainstream rock didn’t hurt the band’s image at all. They were on top of the world with popularity and success, but in spite of that success, the group disbanded in 2005. It was cited that the members of the group wanted to explore other options.

Lead singer, Beto Cuevas went solo, releasing two albums on his own. In 2014, the band reunited for some concert tours, and now, we have a brand new album from La Ley. It’s been sixteen years since the group has recorded together.

La Ley Adaptacion embraces pop music after a 13-year absence and does it correctly.

The album contains 12 tracks, two of the song are in English. “Child,” a ballad, and “Soul Chauffer” is an upbeat pop song that is reminiscent of Duran Duran’s new album, “Paper Gods.” The Spanish tracks fall closer to pop than the band’s classic rock sound. This change is not all a bad thing for some people.

With La Ley Adaptacion, the group consists of Beto Cuevas, Mauricio Clavería, and Pedro Frugone. About 35 songs were written for the album, but Cuevas stated that 12 were chosen for the album with two as bonus tracks. On all the albums covers I have seen, the CD version released has only the 12 tracks. Wikipedia cites three bonus tracks. These extra songs have been saved for a deluxe edition to be published at a later date.

I believe that La Ley created a perfect pop album with Adaptacion. Each song works in harmony with each other and together produce a pleasant album to add to your collection. It could be one of the best albums of 2016, though we are only halfway through the year.
