Miguel Bose – “XXX” (1987)

XXX was only of the first Miguel Bose albums I ever purchased as I used to see the video “Como Un Lobo” video on my daily video shows like Video Exitos back in the day. I think I really only listened to “Quieres America” and “Como Un Lobo” for the most part of the album. I recently found a sealed copy of the album at a record store in Houston and decided to pick it up again to add to the rebuilding of my vinyl collection.

Miguel Bose is usually hit or miss for me, as I am not a dedicated fan but I understand why his music is so very well received in Latin America. He is pretty much musically universal as he can appeal to pop fans as well as contemporary adult pop and ballads. In 1987, he was a pretty Spaniard that had sex appeal for the young ladies and well, the gays liked him too.

The music is super mellow; but for 80’s music, I give Bose points for creating music that stands up over the years. You honestly can’t tell it is almost 30 years old. He is the reason that music is so universal and why is longevity will sustain even to his retirement and/or death. Bose will always be one of the greatest singer/songwriters in Latin American; though his music isn’t one of my favorites.

“Over My Head” is the only English-language song on the album and it is quite good, giving this album a very European feel. There are tons of great songs on this album and is probably one of my favorites of his. Besides the two most recognized songs, “Como Un Lobo” and “Quieres America”, I really like “Duende” a lot. It’s an upbeat song that has a good beat and compared to a lot of the new wave 80’s music in the US at the time.

XXX, in my opinion, is probably one of the most accessible albums and is a great place to start if you want to give Miguel Bose a chance.
